The Crosstown Shopping Center will undergo a multi-million dollar transformation starting this Fall.
Part of the 10th Street Crosstown Shopping Center in Bloomington is set to undergo demolition within the next month.
The Plan Commission approved plans Monday for the multi-million dollar redevelopment project. The two new, three story buildings will house retail on the first floors and Indiana University offices on top.
Eric Stolberg is the president and CEO of WS Property Group, which will construct the buildings and manage the site. He says the redevelopment includes better walkways and a pedestrian plaza with outdoor seating.
"Crosstown is in a high pedestrian area within the campus, with a lot of foot traffic, and for years it’s been a destination for a lot of the students, faculty and staff," Stolberg says.
Stolberg says it's unclear how much the project will cost exactly, but confirms it will be substantial. With rapid eastside developments underway, including the new IU Health Bloomington hospital and medical campus, he says the Crosstown center needed the upgrade.
Construction will happen in phases, starting with the east side building.
The first phase is expected to be complete next August, then construction of the west side building will begin. Businesses currently in that building, including Lennie's, Pizza X, Red Mango and Subway, will be able to move to the new east side complex.
Stolberg says height variances still need to be approved through the Board of Zoning Appeals.
